About

Named for one very good dog

Floyd's Love exists for the moment before a dog comes home — and for every ordinary day after. It is written by one person who has spent her working life on both sides of that moment.

Kerri

Founder of Floyd's Love

  • Veterinary nurse
  • Owned a dog daycare and grooming business
  • Owned a dog walking and pet-sitting business — still walks dogs today

Veterinary nurse, owner of a dog daycare and grooming business, and still a dog walker today — the person who reads every assessment herself.

This started with a dog named Floyd. Floyd was a big boy — a large boxer-lab mix with a white patch on his chest, the kind of dog people noticed. And that's exactly what taught me the thing I couldn't unsee: people reacted to him before they knew a single thing about him, just because he was big. Meanwhile, all around us, I watched owners move through the world like their dog existed in a bubble — dogs lunging, people on their phones, “he's friendly!” shouted a second too late. Nobody had been taught that owning a dog isn't just about your dog — it's about being aware of every dog and person around you.

I'd been watching the other end of this for years. I have owned a dog daycare and grooming business, a dog walking and pet-sitting business, and have worked as a veterinary nurse. I still walk dogs today. From every one of those angles — the intake, the leash, the vet table — I saw the same heartbreak on repeat: dogs surrendered, dogs hurt, families devastated, almost always for reasons someone could have prevented if they'd just been told the truth first.

That's the truth most of the pet world won't say out loud: a dog is not a purchase. It's a promise. Love isn't enough to keep that promise — love plus preparation is. And almost nobody prepares, because nobody teaches them how.

So I built Floyd's Love. Not to sell dogs or gear, but to make sure the right dogs go to the right homes — prepared. Every person who becomes a Prepared Owner carries a little piece of what Floyd taught me forward. He's gone now, but this is how his lesson keeps working.

If you're here, you're the kind of person who wants to do it right. Welcome. You're a Prepared Owner now.

Prepared, not perfect.

Why we exist

Nobody should bring a dog home and find out the hard way

Most dogs who end up surrendered were not mistreated. Their people were unprepared — for the cost, the first sleepless week, the chewed doorframe, the eight-year-old dog who had never been brushed. Floyd's Love exists to close that gap before the dog is home, with a preparation program, a plain-language health library and a person who answers your assessment herself.

Prepared, not perfect

No one is ready for everything. The goal is knowing what is coming, what it costs, and who to call when it goes sideways — not passing a test.

Plain language, never a lecture

Everything is written the way a working dog professional would explain it in your kitchen: the point first, the reason second, no jargon to hide behind.

Honest about the limits

This is education, not veterinary care, not a breeder, and not a licensing body. When the answer is your own vet, we say so plainly.

Every dog's beginning counts

Shelter, rescue, rehome or a responsible breeder — how the dog arrives matters far less than how prepared the person on the other end of the leash is.

What this is

  • An educational preparation program for people getting a dog — or already living with one.
  • A plain-language pet-health reference, edited by a working dog professional.
  • Honest about breeds: what they were shaped to do, and who they are not right for.

What this isn't

  • Not veterinary care. Nothing here replaces your own vet, who can examine your dog.
  • Not a breeder, a shelter, or a marketplace — we don't sell or place dogs.
  • Not a licensing body. The Prepared Owner certificate is a completion credential from Floyd's Love, not a professional accreditation.
